organic micropollutants, pharmaceuticals, constructed wetlands, green roofs
Theme 3 - Taking Actions
Our research is focused on the application of blue-green infrastructure, including constructed wetlands and green roofs, for CEC removal.
We offer:
- Unique demonstration and training facility consisting of 12 decentralized wastewater treatment plants, treating real municipal wastewater, equipped with automatic sampling system and dosing station, which offers possibility to modify the influent composition (https://www.ufz.de/index.php?en=40553)
- the world's first research green roof (https://www.ufz.de/index.php?en=46264) which includes an intensely greened, an evaporation-optimised and an extensively vegetated sections. The fate of organic contaminants in alternative water streams used for green roof irrigation (i.e., groundwater, grey water) is of interest.
- up-to-date laboratory facilities, including HPLC-MS/MS Qtrap and Orbitrap for analysis of organic micropollutants and their metabolites in water and soil, stable isotope lab for cultivation-independent studies of bacterial functions, microbilogical lab for studying antibiotic resistance.
We are interested to co-operate under both Theme 1 (measuring organic contaminants and ARB/ARG) and Theme 3 (offering our blue-green research infrastructure to study mitigation measures for aquatic pollutant removal)
The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences. We are part of the largest scientific organization in Germany, the Helmholtz association. Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of the natural resources.
