emerging chemical pollutants; pesticides; anti retroviral drugs; pharmaceuticals; personal care products
Theme 1 - Measuring
We can offer expertise in the monitoring of emerging chemical pollutants (ECPs) using state-of-the-art equipment including comprehensive two dimensional gas chromatography with time of flight mass detection (GCxGC-ToFMS) and LC-MS/MS.
In addition we have experience in the development of screening methods for pollutants in water using fluorescence sensor technologies based on nanomaterials. We have applied this approach to pharmaceuticals (eg acetaminophen); personal care products (eg triclosan); pesticides (eg atrazine) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
We develop novel sampling techniques for ECPs in water, such as polydimethylsiloxane sampling loops and graphene adsorbents.
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Pretoria has a history of excellence in analytical chemistry, with well resourced laboratories to enable fundamental and applied research. The University of Pretoria is the largest residential university in South Africa with close to 60 000 students and it has been acknowledged as one of the leading universities on the continent in various world rankings.
